What Questions Should You Ask Your Photographer Before Your Branding Photoshoot?

A branding photoshoot is your moment to define how you’re seen by the world. Whether you're a small business owner, entrepreneur, or climbing the corporate ladder, the right images can elevate your brand, build trust, and create meaningful connections with your audience.

But choosing the right branding photographer isn’t just about loving their portfolio (though yes, you should love their work. Shameless plug, here’s mine), it’s about making sure they understand your vision, goals, and voice.

Here are a few key questions to ask before booking your branding photo session:

1.   What’s your experience with branding photography?

Not all photography is the same. Branding photography requires a unique mix of technical skill and creative strategy. You want someone who knows how to tell a visual story that aligns with your business or personal brand, not just someone who takes pretty pictures.

2.   How do you help clients prepare for their session?

Preparation is everything. A great photographer will offer styling tips, wardrobe advice (like whether that tie is too much), a prep guide, and pre-session consultations so you can ask your questions and share your thoughts, desires, and concerns.

3.   Do you include professional hair and makeup?

Some branding photographers include this as part of their branding sessions (like we do at Valentina Portraiture), while others may offer it as an add-on or expect you to handle it yourself. Be sure to ask.

Our take on professional hair and makeup is that it’s a non-negotiable. Why? Because we want every client to feel relaxed and pampered before their close-up. By the time you get out of our makeup artist’s chair, you will feel empowered, confident and ready to stare through the camera lens and directly into the heart of your viewer.

4.   Will you help with posing and direction?

The number one thing that causes photography anxiety? Posing! Don’t stress! That’s our job, not yours. A branding photographer should guide you through posing so that you feel relaxed, natural, and genuinely you.

5.   How long is the session and how many wardrobe changes can I have?

Branding photography is all about variety and versatility. You’ll want to know how many outfit changes are allowed, what kind of backgrounds or locations are available, and how much time will be allowed for the overall experience.

6.   How are the photos delivered and how many will I receive?

Make sure you understand the full deliverables: how many edited images you’ll receive, the format, resolution, and how quickly you’ll get them. You can read more about our pricing and packages here.
