How to Prepare for Your Maternity Portrait Session in Lakeway, TX

There is a version of pregnancy that gets photographed the most, the soft one. Golden hour in a wheat field. A gauzy dress catching the wind.

It is lovely. It is also only half the story

Because what I see, session after session, is something bolder.

A woman at the height of her own transformation, carrying a kind of strength she has never had to access before. She is not fragile. She is not just "glowing." She is becoming, right in front of the lens. That is the version I want to capture.

If you are pregnant and thinking about booking a maternity session, here is what I tell every woman who sits down with me for her consultation.

Book Between 30 and 34 Weeks

Timing matters more than most women expect. Book too early, and the shape of this moment has not fully arrived yet. Wait too long, and you risk swelling, exhaustion, or an early arrival changing your plans entirely.

The sweet spot is between 30 and 34 weeks. Your bump has its full, unmistakable shape. You still have the energy to stand, move, and hold a pose with intention.

And there is enough cushion in the calendar that if baby decides to make an early entrance, we still have time to work with.

Studio vs. Outdoor: An Honest Comparison

Outdoor maternity sessions are common, and there is a reason for that: natural light is forgiving, and open fields photograph beautifully.

But an outdoor session also comes with variables you cannot direct: heat, wind, harsh midday sun, and uneven ground that is not exactly comfortable to pose on at eight months pregnant.

A studio session is different. Every element is controlled: the light, the temperature, the backdrop, the privacy. Nothing is left to chance, and nothing is rushed because a cloud moved or the light is fading.

For a woman who wants images that feel timeless and not just trendy, the kind you would frame and display for the next thirty years, not only post and scroll past, a studio gives me the control to make that happen.

This is not a case against the outdoors. It is a case for knowing what you actually want on your wall.

What to Wear

This is the question I get asked the most, so let me make it simple.

Bring more than what you think you need. Even if you only wear two looks, having options changes everything once we start shooting.

Fitted over flowy, when it counts. A flowy gown is beautiful for certain shots, but a fitted piece is what actually shows the shape of this moment, the whole reason you are here. We will use both, but do not skip the fitted option out of nerves.

That is usually the image a woman ends up loving most.

Solid, rich colors photograph best. Deep jewel tones, warm neutrals, and classic black hold up beautifully against studio light. Busy patterns and logos tend to compete with you instead of supporting you.

Bring your partner's or your other children's outfits too, if they are joining part of the session. We will coordinate palettes together beforehand so nothing feels mismatched or accidental.

Skip anything brand new. Wear it around the house first. Comfort reads on camera, and so does discomfort.

If you are unsure about anything, bring it anyway. I would rather help you decide in person than have you leave something at home that turns out to be exactly right.

How to Prepare Beyond the Closet

Hair and makeup are included. This is not the day to test a new look. You will have a professional team dedicated to you, so you can walk in and simply exist in the moment instead of managing how you look.

Hydrate for a few days beforehand. It sounds small. It is not.

Skin holds light differently when you are hydrated, and at this stage of pregnancy, your skin is doing a lot of work already.

Eat before you arrive. A studio session with hair, makeup, styling, and posing takes real energy. Come in fed and rested, not running on adrenaline alone.

Let go of how you think you should look. This is the one that matters most. So many women arrive already apologizing for their body, for the swelling, the stretch marks, the size of the moment they are in.

You do not need to explain any of that to me.

I have photographed hundreds of women at this exact stage, and I promise you: what you are worried about is rarely what shows up in the final image.

What shows up is presence. Power. A confident woman who let herself be seen.

You Do Not Need to Feel Ready. You Just Need to Decide.

I hear this often: "I'll book once I feel more confident."

The truth is, confidence tends to arrive during the session, not before it.

It shows up once the lighting is right, once you are being directed instead of guessing, once you realize no one in the room is judging you the way you have been judging yourself.

This is your story. It only happens once. Let's make sure it's remembered exactly as it deserves to be.

If you are pregnant and have been thinking about this for a while, the next step is simple.

A consultation is where we talk through timing, styling, and what you actually want these images to say.

No pressure, no obligation, just a conversation.
