One of the questions I hear from expectant mothers is, “When should I schedule my maternity photos?”
If you're pregnant and thinking about having portraits taken, you've probably wondered the same thing. You want to capture this season, but you might not know when your bump will be showing enough, when you'll feel your best, or how far in advance you should plan.
For most of my clients, I recommend scheduling maternity photoshoot sessions between 30 and 35 weeks. But there's a little more to consider than the number of weeks you're pregnant.
Let's talk about what to keep in mind as you plan your session.
When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?
For many women, the sweet spot for maternity photography is between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is usually more defined by this point, and you may still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.
At my studio in Lakeway, just outside Austin, I generally recommend planning your session around 30 to 35 weeks, depending on how you're feeling and how your pregnancy is progressing.
Every woman experiences pregnancy differently. Some have a more visible bump earlier, while others prefer to wait a little longer.
What matters most is finding a time that works for you.
I also encourage you to reach out before you reach that window. Planning ahead gives us time to talk about your vision, explore wardrobe options, and make sure the experience feels right for you.
You won't have to figure everything out at the last minute.
What If I'm Not Sure When I'll Feel Ready?
That's completely understandable.
Pregnancy brings a lot of changes, and you might not know exactly how you'll feel a few weeks from now. You may be excited to have your portraits taken but still feel a little unsure about being in front of the camera.
You don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out.
We can talk about where you are in your pregnancy, what you're hoping for from your portraits, and what would help you feel comfortable. From there, we can find a time that makes sense.
And if you're already further along than you planned to be, don't assume you've missed your opportunity. Let's talk about your timeline and see what might work.
Your Maternity Session Doesn't Have to Look a Certain Way
Sometimes, women come to me with a clear idea of what they want their maternity portraits to look like. Others know they want to remember this season but aren't quite sure how they want it captured.
Both are good places to start.
You might love the look of a simple, fitted dress that highlights your bump. You might prefer something softer and more flowing, or a more editorial look inspired by fashion photography.
You also don't have to show your bare bump or wear something you wouldn't normally feel comfortable in.
My job is to understand what feels like you and help bring that vision to life. We'll talk through wardrobe, styling, and the overall feel of your portraits before your session, so you have a plan without feeling limited by it.
The goal isn't to recreate someone else's maternity photos. It's to create portraits that feel personal to you.
What Happens During a Studio Maternity Session?
If you've never had a professional portrait session before, you might be wondering what to expect.
At Valentina Portraiture, the experience begins well before you step in front of the camera.
We'll talk about what you want your portraits to reflect, how you'd like to feel when you see them, and what matters to you about this season of your life.
From there, we'll plan the details together.
We'll Plan Your Wardrobe
You don't need to arrive with a collection of maternity dresses or know exactly what to wear.
We'll talk about your style, the looks you gravitate toward, and what you feel comfortable in. We can also look at pieces you already own and explore options that complement the vision for your session.
These details help make the portraits feel cohesive while still reflecting who you are.
You'll Have Guidance Throughout the Session
You don't need to know how to pose, and you don't need to know what to do with your hands.
I'll guide you through each pose and make small adjustments along the way. We'll pay attention to the details, but I also want you to feel comfortable enough to settle into the experience.
You can ask questions, take breaks, and let me know if something doesn't feel right. We'll work at a pace that respects your comfort.
We'll Create Something With Your Vision in Mind
Some women want portraits that feel soft and understated. Others want something more polished, artistic, or fashion-inspired.
There's room for that variety.
The conversations we have before your session help guide the lighting, wardrobe, posing, and overall direction. Rather than following a set formula, we'll create something that reflects what you want to remember about this time.
That's one of the things I love about working in a private portrait studio. We have the space to slow down, pay attention, and make the experience personal.
How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photos
You don't need to do a lot to prepare, but a little planning can make the experience easier.
Book your session early. If you're hoping to have maternity portraits around 30 to 35 weeks, it's helpful to reach out during your second trimester. That gives us time to plan without rushing.
Think about what you want your portraits to feel like. You don't need a complete vision. Even knowing that you want something natural, elegant, or more editorial gives us a place to begin.
Give yourself time on the day of your session. If possible, avoid scheduling too many other things around it. You deserve time to get ready and enjoy the experience without watching the clock.
Tell me what you need. If you're feeling tired, have certain movements you'd prefer to avoid, or have questions about what to expect, let me know. We can plan with those things in mind.
Most importantly, you don't need to wait until you feel completely confident or have everything figured out. We can work through the details together.
Choosing a Maternity Photographer in Austin or Lakeway
When you're looking for a maternity photographer, the images are only part of the decision.
Think about how you want the experience to feel, too.
Do you want help planning your wardrobe? Would you feel more comfortable with someone guiding you through the poses? Are you looking for a private studio where you can take your time and create something more personal?
These are worth considering alongside a photographer's style and portfolio.
At Valentina Portraiture, I want to understand the woman in front of my camera, not simply the photographs she's hoping to receive. The planning process, the conversations, and the way we approach your session all play a part in creating portraits that feel meaningful.
A Season Worth Remembering
Pregnancy is a season of anticipation, change, and preparing for someone who will soon become part of your everyday life.
It can also be a time when your attention is naturally focused on everything that's coming next.
Maternity portraits offer a chance to pause and remember where you are right now.
Not just the shape of your bump, but this version of you. The woman you are before meeting your baby, in a season you'll never experience in quite the same way again.
You don't need to look a certain way or have a perfect idea of what your portraits should be. You just need to be open to creating something that feels meaningful to you.
If you're expecting and thinking about maternity portraits, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
