When is the Best Time to Take Holiday Photos So That You Can Get Those Cards Out on Time?

Some of us like to live on the edge, like when it’s mid-December, your to-do list is overflowing, and you still haven’t taken your holiday portraits. If you’ve felt this rush, you know what I’m talking about. You’re walking a tight rope AND holding your breath at the same time.

Listen, get your thrills another way.

Book your holiday portrait session now, so your holiday cards can get out on time, look amazing, and you still have space for all the festive merriment that comes with the season. Here’s what to know about timing for holiday photo sessions.

The Sweet Spot: October to Early November for Your Portrait Session

The best time to take your holiday photos is between October and early to mid-November. If you’re opting outdoors, the light during this time of year is dreamy. What’s more, you beat the holiday rush. Photographers and print labs get busy later in the year as the procrastinators come knocking on their doors.

Shooting early means less stress (yes, we all need this!), quicker turnaround times, and first dibs on session slots. It also allows plenty of time for printing and mailing without the scramble.

When Should Cards Go Out?

Once your portrait session is complete, it’s time to think about the post office. To make sure your holiday cards arrive before the season hits full swing, aim to send them between December 1st and 15th.

If you work backward from that date, this again means photos should be taken no later than mid-November, and you should order your prints/cards by the end of November.
